This is a summary of how court cases go. Partly inspired from posts about recent events that show me just how much the general public doesn't know about what happens after arrest and before prison (or acquittal).

Warning: Much of this is specific to my state. Not even just my country: my state! I've tried here and there to mention other ways things are done, but I have almost ten years of experience in this one and approximately zero in any other.

Part 1: How Cases Begin/"Investigation"

One question seems to come up a lot in true crime cases. That question is: why are the police so bad at this? Why didn't they canvass the scene? Why didn't they get witnesses? Why didn't they (insert incredibly basic investigative step here)?

Sorry to bust your bubble, but police rarely do any actual investigating. Cases most commonly begin in the following ways.

1: Case directly reported to police. There are several different types of this. The most common two are via 911 call and via citizen report (i.e., coming into the police station to report a crime). However, in recent years, we've seen the rise of automated reporting of certain crimes via social media companies, most famously with regards to child sex abuse material. The police will simply get a report that x IP address accessed/shared/downloaded Y image at Z time.

2: Traffic stop. The police saw a car committing a minor traffic violation (ran a red light, headlights out, failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign, changed lanes without signalling, etc.) and they stopped it. They found a pretext or got "permission" to search the car from the driver (who likely did not really know they could refuse). Or they got a drug dog to run around the car. (Drug dogs are not nearly as accurate as people think they are; overwhelmingly drug dogs respond to the signals of their handler and not the presence of drugs. I can cite studies if requested.)

3: Narcotics investigation. This is a distant third, but worth mentioning because it's probably the most proactive that most police departments get on a regular basis. They will have undercover officers or informants do controlled buys of narcotics on video, meticulously documented before and after. They take a level of care with this type of investigation otherwise only really reserved for the most violent felonies.

This all isn't to say that cases can't come up any other way. Sometimes police departments really do just do long-term investigations of things. Mostly, I find, they spend so much time picking the low-hanging fruit (guy who had drugs on traffic stop, yelling drunk homeless person) that the more complex and complicated cases just get dropped.

What happens next?

Next, the police are supposed to investigate. Gather evidence? Talk to people?

This is going to be disappointing to many people as well, but police tend to do the absolute minimum necessary investigation to establish the case and get a conviction, then pass it over to the prosecution. This is even if there are leads and suspects they haven't cleared. They'll just leave that kind of thing out of the final report, unless the defense comes specifically nosing around.

Let me give a few specific examples.

Example 1: 911 call for assault and battery. Officers arrive to find that two brothers absolutely beat the ever-loving shit out of each other at grandma's funeral. Brother 2 has left. Brother 1 remains. The police talk to Brother 1, who has a broken nose. Brother 1 fully blames the aggression on Brother 2, claiming that Brother 2 attacked him unprovoked and broke his nose. Brother 2's wife backs him up. The police, having gotten two witnesses saying one version of events, bring a malicious wounding charge without ever having spoken to Brother 1. A different officer serves Brother 1's arrest warrant and does not interrogate him in any way.

This is not unusual. Once the officers have found enough to arrest one person, often the last thing they want to do is generate more work for themselves by then finding a reason the case isn't so simple and easy. That would mean they then have to talk to many more people, examine evidence, and make a decision as to who the "primary aggressor" was, which will require a judgment call. Meanwhile, their extra investigation has just made it easier for the defense to win at a trial later on, because now the defense has loads of helpful info. They helped the “bad guys” by doing their job better. Can y’all see why an officer wouldn’t even bother? Would just go on to the next easy case instead of staying late and tracking down another witness?

In my past assault and battery cases, it has been just about as common for officers to have spoken to both parties as it was for officers to have only spoken to one party.

Example 2: Reported Property Damage. Girlfriend walks into a police station and says "my boyfriend broke my phone." (In my jurisdiction, a person can just walk straight in front of a judge, swear that what they said was true, and the judge will issue an arrest warrant. This is not true in all jurisdictions and is in fact completely fucking buck wild.) Police ask her a couple questions, look at the phone, bring a warrant, it's done. Maybe they call the boyfriend and ask him what happened. This is most likely the extent of the investigation.

You notice both of these are incredibly low-effort cases that result in easy arrests and immediate prosecutions. Wow, could that help an officer’s statistics? Could it actually hurt his stats if he takes longer and does a better job?

Okay, what happens now? The police have a suspect, they (in theory) know what happened.

Next, police seek an arrest warrant.

This involves going before a judge and swearing that there's probable cause to believe that their suspect committed their crime as alleged.

1: The Affidavit. There are very few rules for what they can and can't say in these affidavits to get their search warrants. Police officers can attest/swear to things that other police officers saw, because of "imputed knowledge." They can quote witnesses. They can decline to identify informants, as long as they say that their informant has a history of being reliable. (They do not have to provide any evidence of that history.)

They don't have to include all the facts. They don't have to include facts that contradict their version of events. They're not supposed to lie, but sometimes these affidavits are not provided to defense counsel and are sealed, so the defense can't even find out later what they said. And they can shop around for judges who are the most friendly. If one judge says "no," they can try another.

On top of that, all they have to show is "probable cause." Nobody is willing to put a percentage likelihood on "probable cause," but places tend to agree to things like: if there are four guys in a car and you find drugs where all four could reach it, you have probable cause for all four. It's not that you probably did it. It's more than a suspicion that you did it. In my experience, "probable cause" means that there's literally any reason to believe that this person might have actually done this thing.

2: No-Knock Warrants. The media has made a big deal these days of no-knock warrants and nighttime "warrant service." These are when the police bust into someone's house without announcing themselves, at night, in order to take everyone by surprise. This is horrendously dangerous! And yet, police seem to crave it. They get really, really mad when anyone tries to take it away.

My jurisdiction banned arrest warrants after dark, but didn't do the same for search warrants. Guess when all search warrants seem to get served? Goddamn midnight, that's when.

Furthermore, police seem to be able to request exceptions to the no-knock, daytime only rules. Recently, I saw a case where that exception was granted for the following reason: "drugs can be consumed or sold with great speed so might not be there in the morning." Okay, cool, if that's a good enough reason to dispense with the knock-in-the-daytime requirement for one case, that means that literally every other drug case qualifies for dispensing with that requirement too.

3: When to serve the warrant? After business hours on a Friday, obviously. That means that the person they arrest will be in holding over the whole weekend before getting to see a judge on Monday. That's like forty-eight extra hours of jail time, in which they won't have a lawyer, for police to visit them and try and pressure them into confessing, or just intimidate them into feeling like shit.

4: What happens when warrant is served? The suspect is arrested in whatever they were wearing, sometimes allowed to grab phone and wallet but sometimes not for reasons I can't even attempt to explain, they are driven to the jail, and they are processed in. They then wait until they can see a judicial officer to hear about the question of bond. But that's the subject of the next post!

George adjusted the font size, playing around with its positioning until he was happy with it. The image he'd uploaded himself already, freshly taken with his subject looking guilelessly at his phone. He smirked. Yes, this was perfect. Now, it was just a matter of getting it printed. He selected the sizes, inserted his banking details and then finalized the order. The confirmation page told him it would be printed and delivered within 2-3 days. George shut down his computer. He wanted a smoothie after all of that hard work. A few days later, he'd more or less forgotten about it. Dream had been all over the place, on a rapid rollercoaster of hyper focused on his actual content and then hyper melancholic, railing against how unfair it was that every single point he was making was taken out of context, or deliberately misconstrued. George only cared because Dream did. Personally, he thought that that particular group severely lacked media literacy, common sense and were pretty hypocritical to boot, so he wasn't all that fussed over cutting ties. It wasn't like he'd ever be moving back there to see any of them again. No, he was perfectly at home here, despite the myriads of ways he was allergic to this ridiculous country. He'd fight tooth and nail to stay here and do exactly what he was doing now, trying to find any small thing he could do to cheer Dream up and help him move on from this. The same as what Dream had been doing for him for years now. The bell went for the gate and George wandered over to his monitor. On the screen, a UPS driver waved at the intercom and George buzzed him through.

Sapnap was streaming with his Spanish friends, he was pretty sure, and Dream was locked away in his office working on coding with Callahan, so that left George to meet the driver at the front door, signing for the package.

After closing the door and watching for the driver to leave, the gate locking behind him, George went and sat down on the couch. The package was addressed to him, and he ripped it open, absolutely delighted as he pulled up the first sweatshirt. It was perfect.

Now, he had to decide if he would interrupt Dream or wait for him to surface from his office. Normally, he wouldn't interrupt Dream unless it was an actual emergency. He knew himself how annoying it was to be taken out of the zone, especially if you were writing in multiple coding languages. He should probably wait. George put on the sweatshirt in his size and then curled up on the couch, putting some Breaking Bad on in the background as he waited for Dream. He didn't know how much later it was when Dream gently shook his shoulder, waking him. "I'm sorry," Dream said, smiling down at him as George blearily looked up, "were you waiting for me?" Dream knew him too well. This was classic 'George waiting for Dream' behavior, and it showed how often it happened that Dream could now clock it immediately for what it was.

"I got you a present," George said, clearing his throat and sitting up. He searched around under the blanket he'd pulled over himself, finding the second sweatshirt lodged in under his hip. He tugged it free and handed it to Dream. Dream blinked at the design, that slow smile that George loved so much blooming on his face. "You made this?" Dream asked.

George just smiled back. Dream laughed and pulled the sweater on over his riotous curls, and George leaned back into the couch, taking in his creation. It was a beige color, with a picture of Patches front and center, framed with pink sparkles and hearts. The text, in the most girly pink font George had been able to find, read 'Daddy's Little Whore.' "I love it," Dream beamed.

George let his blanket drop, showing that he was wearing one as well, and Dream laughed again. He held out a hand, pulling George up to his feet as he took it. "It's perfect," Dream said affectionately, his hands coming up to frame George's face. "You're perfect." He kissed George in that tender way of his, thumbs stroking his cheeks and lips gentle as he coaxed George to respond to him. George melted into it, wrapping his arms around Dream's torso, lazily returning his sweet kisses. "Let's go show Sapnap," Dream said a few minutes later, smirking as he leaned back and looked down at George. "What if he's still streaming?" George asked. It went without saying, he assumed, that these would be house sweatshirts only. "We'll stand in the doorway where we can't be seen," Dream assured him. ***

"What the fuck?" Sapnap said with a shocked laugh. "What the actual fuck?!"

Sapnap's chat erupted in question marks and demands to see what he was looking at though his opened door. "No way, chat," Sapnap said, shaking his head. "Not this time."

In the background, in a clip that was analyzed by many fans later, you could definitely make out Dream and George's giggles.

Ao3 - Inserting Gifs/Images into Your Comments

Have you ever felt that words couldn't convey how a fic made you feel? Or you've been left speechless and don't know what to say?

Well ao3 allows you to have the ability to insert a gif/image in your comment. Gifs/Images can say so much without words and can also be quite a humorous way to convey your emotion and let the writer know how much you love their fic! My personal favorite combo is quoting back a line followed by my reaction image/gif. Comments are so important to fic writers and so greatly appreciated.

So here's the code:

How to acquire your image/gif link

Find your reaction image/gif. I like using google images (slide to "search tools" -> "any type" -> "gifs"), tenor and tumblr (remove "v" from .gif)

Make sure to double click, and open the image/gif in a new tab and copy the link.

IMPORTANT: A good way to figure out if you're using the right link is by checking that it ends in .jpg, .gif).

But we're not done yet! Because your image/gif may come out ginormous. Sizes will vary across different images and gifs. And you might be bothered by how insanely huge an image looks after your post it. I always use this next step as I don't want a massive image in my comment.

TO FIX SIZING. (Great thing about learning this is it will actually do all the work for you and spit out the full code.)

1. Open ao3. In the top right corner click: "post" -> "new work".

2. Scroll to the bottom to the "work text*" box and click "rich text"

3. Click on the image insert (circled in red).

4. Paste the image/gif link. It will automatically add the width and height. Change the height to "100" for the height size. (ofc you can change it to whatever you like but around 100 is a good size).

5. Now at the top of the "work text*" box. click on "html". Copy this code! (***make sure not to copy the <p> paragraph </p> or it will mess up your spacing.)

Considering its Pride month and I woke up thinking about MCSM last night, here’s some kinda specific queer gender identity headcanons I have for some of the characters

Cassie - There’s too many other issues in her head for her to also worry about her gender identity right now. She simply doesn’t care about it and is ambivalent to how people address her. Some say she’s a woman, some say she’s a man. Whatever floats your boat, just don’t approach her directly. In a healthier environment and actual headspace to deal with that, she’d probably identify somewhere on the non-binary spectrum… but right now she has other issues to deal with.

Aiden - It’s already a popular headcanon, so it shouldn’t be shocking that I think he’s a trans man. That being said, let me get deeper into it. I do believe that during the time we see him in game, he’d be like two or three years into his transition and still having some self image issues. I don’t think his identity would be a root cause for his insecurities, but it definitely does not make it easier. On one hand he feels much more confident than ever, but there’s still some doubt inside, which he tries to overcompensate with his behavior.

Petra - Every time I see someone draw Butch Petra I shed a tear of joy. It makes so much sense to me considering how tough she tries to appeal, how most of her role models are very traditionally masculine. Not to mention that with her whole season two arc there could be a yet another layer of how butches are often times pressured to act. I love it. I need to see more of it.

I’m also digging the idea of Petra having a drag king persona called Mister Butter.

Romeo - He’s kind of a god, so we could probably get into whether or not human understanding of gender qualifies here… but I do think that depowered Romeo specifically identifies as a man, but in a very 70s/80s flamboyant way.

Xara - Similar thing with Xara? I think she’s like an older generation lesbian, where she kinda sees it being both as a gender expression and sexuality? She doesn’t fully get the modern understanding of gender identities and terms, but also is not defensive about it. She’s too chronically exhausted to learn it but will address you as you want. Your name is Jesse, you want to be adressed as they? Sure thing bud. Just give me a piece of quiet. I just want to sleep.

Jesse - Jesse is, was and always will be genderfluid in my eyes. Partially because they’re a player insert, but also I do think that with that in mind, their writing is the most gender ambivalent of all characters? If that makes sense?

Nell - In my eyes Nell is nonbinary, she’s sapphic and she’s the most educated about this topic. She will give you the most eye opening take on identity and politics, and then in the next sentence say the most nonsensical wildest story you’ve ever heard. She’s like a gender Wizard. You never know what to expect, but sure enough you will leave the conversation a changed man.

Olivia - I think she’s a trans woman. I don’t have anything more specific to say, it’s just what seems obvious in my eyes and also you could play around with the idea that Ellegaard was the one to break her egg. I love trans women in STEM. And also there’s the funny dynamic of Axel being the only cis person from the Treehouse trio and having existential dread over whether or not he might also be an egg or not. And Jesse and Olivia teasing him about it.

Character Description: Choi Yeona

Alright SO.

It's probably very obvious by now that Choi Yeona (yeona being the Korean-stand in name i chose for "y/n") is really just a fun, silly author/self-insert lmao. I picture someone resembling myself for her and dear god I'm embarrassed to type that out. Since i knew this would turn into an extremely long fic, I also knew it would be easier to model Yeona as a character after myself, and hearing that you currently use my pfp for her makes me giggle.

...Anyway. Let's get into it:

Clothes

This is easiest, so I'll start here. Yeona really looks up to Sangah and Dokja in particular, so she searched for an apocalypse outfit similar to theirs. I took inspiration from Yelena Belova's "White Widow" suit from Marvel comics/movies. I picture it as being tight, but not skin tight like Sangah's. Vest, harness + straps, and boots I see as being all black

The right is an awesome cosplay by halcybella on instagram!

In the early scenarios, we have (chronological order):

hiking pants (RIP cute style) and a plain tee

Physical appearance

I'll let Dokja describe her for you first. We'll peek into his thoughts:

skin discoloration starting at her fingertips up to her knuckles from overuse of 'Sacred Light'. a bit like old burn scars

Small, story-specific traits

When she transmigrates/regresses, her accumulated scars are wiped clean, like a "rebirth" of sorts (similar to Kim Dokja's)

Pre-transmigration: [redacted], [redacted], thin scar across the neck like a smile, [redacted]

0th round/first try: forehead scar, long burn stripe across her back, various scars on her hands, arms, and legs

1st round/second try: no major ones, as of Ep. VII

turns out doing a lot of drawing and crochet all the time makes your wrists and thumbs hurt. I'm trying to give myself a break from crafting and art for a bit (i am bad at avoiding them) so there's gonna be a little delay on any asks that i want to add images to. i do have a wrist brace and i am trying to figure out where i put my nice compression gloves.

I'm worried

Hi, I'm Gabe, I'm 19, and I live in the U.S.

I am a trans man. This is something that has been apparent to me for years now, and something I have suspected (or, in a way, hoped for) for most of my life. I have always felt a joy in aligning myself with the masculine as opposed to the feminine. There are countless personal experiences I could point to in order to show you how I know I'm trans. If you're curious, I could do that. But, for what I aim to say here, I don't think that is necessary. What's important to know is that I like living as a man, being seen as a man, and it burdens me with a deep discomfort and practical disgust to be perceived as anything but.

I've made a sort of peace with my body. My face isn't something I'd consider to be pretty and I keep my hair short. Baggy clothes cover my chest and the rest of my body well. Most days, no one has any idea that I'm trans and simply see me as some boy picking up a gallon of milk. I'm happy that that's the case; I know many others aren't as lucky. I still have my share of reservations about my body, though. I am perfectly fine with being short (to the extent that I even celebrate it), but my chest, my hips, and my thighs bring me dysphoria. (Genitals are a different story that I'd rather not get into on the internet with strangers.) These parts of me are usually easy to ignore, but when I focus on them for too long, sadness overtakes me. I don't want to look like this. I want to be flat, boxy, small. The image of myself in my head doesn't align with what I see in the mirror, and it drags me down.

Another part of me says that cisgender men can have bodies like this, too, and that I shouldn't feel like any less of a man because of it. A third part says that curvy and top-heavy trans men are still men all the same and that stressing over it won't bring any good. As much as it feels good to listen to these voices, I still long for my ideal body. I long because it's a personal desire of mine to look that way, plain and simple. I also long, however, to make day-to-day public life to go smoother. I want people to mistake me for a girl less and call me "sir" and "young man" more; I'd prefer my body to read as a more convenient physical shorthand for manhood.

So, for the sake of my comfort and continued enjoyment of my time on this earth, I'd like to change how my body looks. One way to achieve this would be through the use of testosterone, which, on top of rearranging the stores of fat in my body, would also provide me with the welcome bonus of increased facial and body hair. I am also very interested in receiving top surgery to make my chest more masculine. It lifts my mood just to think of what my body would be like after these treatments, even moreso to know that there is a real possibility that they could be done.

The current climate around trans topics worries me. All I want is to live comfortably, but discussions about criminalizing transness have me fearing the worst. I don't want to force anything onto anyone, to limit or in any way alter anyone's speech, insert myself someplace where I'm endangering others or putting them at a disadvantage, or publicly indulge in a fetish. I'm a simple man with simple desires of a flat chest and he/him pronouns, but there's an army formed against me and people with similar stories.

I'm an American. I believe in freedom. A deep respect for the freedom of speech is something my dad has instilled in me from a young age and that freedom is something I'm thankful for. I believe that if someone wants to say something, they should be able to, and that if someone wants to do something, given that it doesn't bring harm to anyone else (or their property, etc.), they should be able to do it.

There are gray areas that come with that idea, yes, but those are outside the scope of this discussion. What I want to address here are procedures that improve a person's quality of life, procedures like gender-affirming surgery. If this so-called "mutilation" is as bad as some would say, why are so many people happier for having undergone it? Should consenting adults really be kept from personal pursuits like top or bottom surgery? Cis people get cosmetic surgeries all the time, but I don't see the public uproar about those procedures being mutilation. I would also like to ask, what does it matter to you whether someone's genitals could cause or support a pregnancy? The decision to raise a child is a very personal one, and I don't think the general public's ideas need to hold much weight in a potential-parent-to-be's decision making process. If someone is okay with the fact that their body may not work as before and will have visible scars, I think they should be completely within their right to have a surgery or take hormones.

I'd like to revisit the topic of free speech. Someone speaking about their experiences and feelings in their body and about their gender should not be considered pornographic. The average conversation about trans people in no way serves to provide sexual stimulation. Topics regarding genitals and sex should not be confused with explicit content; sex ed is taught in schools, isn't it? Education on these topics is important for many reasons and can prevent unwanted, painful, and dangerous situations. Conversations about transness are simply a dialogue about people's experiences, often with the intention of educating their audience. Given that they aren't intended to get the audience off, they are not porn. People living their lives is not porn. Transness isn't porn.

It deeply concerns me to see people misconstruing what it means to be trans and trying to limits trans healthcare and voices. I have hope for the future, but recent discourse has buried that under a layer of anxieties.

I'm just a boy, sitting at his laptop, worrying about if he's going to have to live with B-cups for the next ten years of his life. Being vocal about issues like this is important. This is how change happens.

The conditions were just so that I decided it was about time I write this. This is my first time posting something like this, but I don't think it'll be my last. Let's keep this conversation going, and let's make this country and this world a place we're happy to call home.

Status Update On The Final Conflict Sprite Hack, alternatively titled, The Thrilling Saga of Promoted Julia, or even, Claire, Give Fucking Context To The Dumb Shit You've Been Posting Already

don't worry besties, i keep the world's most ridiculous hacking notes for this stuff, and i'd really like to share some of them now. Ever wanted to know how messy a Game Gear ROM can be? Ever wanted to read a mad scientist's ramblings about it? come on a journey with me.

(note that i'm not gonna explain much of the technical stuff for now, i'd love to document everything about this game eventually but that's a big task, tonight is for funsies only. so just stare at these bytes like they're eldritch abonimations for now because frankly, they are)

Anyway it all began more than a year ago, when I started digging data on this game. I started with palettes because those are kinda easy to understand, and i honestly don't recall how i got to the map sprites from there, but i did, and thus registered it was in my mad scientist ramblings.

and on that beautiful note, i kinda put aside this project for a whole year, until going back somewhere around last october to try to make a script to imitate the game's compression and thus finally be able to insert sprites. As you might know, it took a christmas miracle to finish it. And because I was and am still afraid of how many extra bytes my battle sprites are gonna take, i shifted my attention to map sprites first, since those were obviously going to be much simpler. *ominous silence* I mean, I already had all these addresses above, right? I'd just have to replace them all, and then go find Julia.

and yeah! that's the last post I made about it on New Year's Eve, I had fun, I bragged about the compression working well only to regret my hubris later because it very much ISN'T, we're desperate for extra space in this land, I championed centaur rights only to again regret my hubris because they're currently the only ones with no promotion sprite, I'M SORRY OKAY i'm trying to fix it we're really lacking bytes in this land

but anyway, it was still going great. Not like the centaurs change much after promotion anyway, the art was still an improvement, and thus I filled the whole memory block. Everyone was there. Except Julia.

It feels clear to me that the devs just ran into the same problem, ran out of space right at the last character. Still sucks that they didn't place her at the next block, but hey, whatever, I easily coded a sprite ripper now that I knew how to deal with the compression, she couldn't be that far, right?

(note: "hooded" mishaela was me misremembering things. i meant this simpler sprite of her, as opposed to the one with a visible face that shows up for most of the game. The fact that this one is the one stored in a coherent way makes me think it was the first one they made, and only later they decided to give her a better face as someone who was gonna have so many scenes)

this is the mess I was looking at, and here's the full sprite for comparison. I have nothing else to add, I understand having separate eye tiles for the animation and I accept that some stuff just got thrown in the end of unrelated block to use the space. But the chair tiles??? no idea what's up with those. For all I know the entire image is just spread around like this.

I haven't looked though, because I had other priorities at the time.

to summarize the next ten billion annotations, this block had a bunch of out of order pointers for every spell effect in the game, including some blank pointers god knows why. Because my script for ripping stuff is amateurish and jank as fuck, i also couldn't tell how many tiles exactly each image has, so this took a lot of trial and error.

There were way smarter ways to find Julia btw, and i'll get to them soon. Still, do i regret this? Of course not. I was gonna want to scrub the whole ROM for unused data one way or another, and knowing all these addresses paves the way for a lot of future changes should I decide to make them. It's pretty nice to know this much about the game. Now, do I regret doing all of this in a single sitting, in a single sunday, ten or so hours of looking non-stop at some garbage bytes?

remember kids, sometimes it's good to step away from your complicated project a bit.

Anyway, the smarter way of doing this that I mentioned earlier is to use a goddamn debugger to track where the game is reading stuff from, especially since I already knew where the function that reads and decompresses images is located. I'm not very experienced with using the debugger, and even so it wasn't too hard to find it. The pointer led to block $38000. If you're keeping track of these numbers, you might realize this is before the place I started, not after. Despite that starting block.. really looking like a starting block. You know, with all the first characters. Why is there stuff before it? The likely answer is that things got messy the more stuff the devs had to put in, but I also like the answer that they just hated my guts personally.

Anyway! I put my little scripts to the test. Attempted to rip all the offset in the block. First ones did not work, and are likely not even graphics, because again, this is a mess. The 23th came out broken, and eventually I figured out it was a tileset for Galam Castle, see I told you there was a reason I was messing with maps all of a sudden. The reason was, a tileset can be in the middle of the characters. Actually, I have already found way two tilesets, both in the middle of unrelated stuff. I have yet to see a block consisting of mostly tilesets. They're just, around.

Who cares though. After this tileset, finally the clouds parted. There it was. The joy of my life, the light of my eyes.

i was so stressed between searching for Julia and dreading the upcoming task of redrawing 50 or so enemies that I don't care much for, that it completely slipped my mind that eventually I would get to redraw Adam for this game. I legit screamed his name when I saw him, absolute joyful moment, you had to be there.

So yeah, stole Julia's thunder a little, sorry woman. She was there though, very last character on the block, after a bunch of NPCs. Not wanting to mess up this far, I was a bit more careful than I was with the previous block, taking the time to count how many bytes I would need before inserting stuff.

anyway, it was always obvious that i would have to learn how to reallocate sprites to other blocks, but this made it clear that i would have to start looking into that like, now. And I would have to find a block with enough space to receive new stuff too, which was looking unlikely with how many things were shoved around in all of them. I tried to save space on this block by messing around with the castle tileset first though.

I saved a total of 50 bytes.

Yeah.

Without much idea on what to do, I just went looking for Mishaela's sprite since it was one of the few missing at that point. Hilariously, she's all alone in a certain block that contains no other graphical data as far as I can tell. It's just her there. I really don't understand why they gave her two sprites, and I would guess it wasn't a very organized decision.

And that's when it hit me, like, yeah, society really has no use for two Mishaelas. It wouldn't hurt much if I reassigned her to use a single sprite, and used this space for Julia instead, right?

So uh, Mishaela's sprites are 557 bytes.

You see Julia's sprites above? Sum up all their sizes together.

The byte economy is harsh and unforgiving.

Small setback though, I could reallocate one of NPCs in her place, as some of them had compressed better.

And that was it, I found the table that points each character to their respective memory block and index, I tested it by bullying Max because of course, and then I assigned the thief NPCs to Mishaela's address. See it all makes sense in context.

And at long last, several weeks after doing the whole rest of the team, I could finally see the final force member.

Embedding images on AO3: A Guide V2

Hi,

So, I thought I would go back and make an updated version of the A03 embedding image guide I made back in September of 2022.

This choice was mainly due to one of the options being viable.

Discord.

Due to the rise in malware distribution, Discord has set expirations on Discord links. This only applies to links that are used outside of Discord.

So, If we wanted to use the option, we would need to update the link every 24 hrs in your work.

Well, with that out the way, let's dive in.

A03 doesn’t actually allow for image hosting itself, so that’s why third-party hosting is needed.

Option 3: Imgur

First sign up for an account. I would recommend this because last year, Imgur began deleting images not tied to a user account. This means that if you upload an image without an account, the image link may eventually expire and the image will be deleted.

Create a new post

Upload your desired photo(s).

Do not hit the Grab Link button

It will not work with AO3

Instead, right, click on the image and hit copy image link or address, depending on your browser.

Now your Imgur Link is ready to use.

Option 4: Using an image hosting service like postimages.org

You can create an account for free with this one. This is pretty straightforward, so I’ll gloss it over.

Once logged in you will be presented with this page.

Upload your image, and you will be taken to this page.

Now, you have a working link from postimages ready to use.

Step 2: Inserting and fitting the image

Head over to Ao3.

Go to the new or existing chapter in which you wish to embed image(s).

HTML OPTION:

Make sure in the HTML editor view.

This is located next to the rich text button in the Worktext section, as shown.

Now, find the place in the text where the image should go...

Now, preview your work to confirm the link is correct.

As you can see the image worked but in my case the image was waaaayyy too big.

So, we can add the width and height attributes to scale the image to a more comfortable size.

First, we need to know the exact dimensions of the image.

This can be done by looking at the size in an image app or can be done with an online tool.

Record these values

In this example, the image is 1080x2400

Now divide each by the same factor; this is important to avoid compressing or stretching the image.

In this example, We quartered/ divided them by 4.

Width = 1080/4 = 270px Hieght = 2400/4 = 600px

Record these values

And update the img tag

src is the path to the URL.

alt is the alternative text for the image. This is used for accessibility as well as be a modern web standard.

width is the image width in pixels

height is the image height in pixels

You insert your values in between the double quotes.

ALWAYS TO REMEMBER:

to close your quote _

to close your image tag

to close and include your units

Here it is much better.

RICH TEXT OPTION:

Make sure in the Rich Text editor view.

Set the cursor where you want the image. Click the image icon.

Set the values in this form.

Use the URL we generated in one of the previous 4 options.

Set the Image description

The width and height may be input automatically; if you are unsure, consult the HTML OPTION to find the dimensions and how to rescale an image.

Alright thanks for telling me other wise I would have never figured lmao But I don't get the "post it part".. where?- (I'm slow okay, and I'm not sure if you got the notifon AO3 because personnaly I never get them, but they're there, like there's a 0 but there is notifs)

What I mean when posting it, I posted the art on tumblr or Twitter when I insert the pic. So then just copy the image address (make sure you click it first so it is full sized and not the tumblr size) and put it in the link box.

It should stay there and not disappear.

So post the art here, and then place it in Ao3 it should work
